If you work with horses, you’ve probably got a horse trailer to get them around safely and securely. But horses aren’t the cleanest animals out there, and the confined space of a horse trailer can get dirty fast. We here at Lone Star Trailers have already talked about the broad strokes of cleaning your horse trailer, but sometimes it helps to get to the nitty gritty. Read on for some details to attend to when cleaning a horse trailer, or contact our store in Lacy Lakeview, Texas, to see the horse trailers we have for sale!

Prep

You’re going to need to move your horse trailer to a relatively level space for parts of this process, and you’ll need some supplies, including but not limited to:

  • Bleach.
  • Baking soda.
  • Dish detergent.
  • Protective rubber cleaning gloves.
  • A high-pressure hose or power washer.

The Floor

This is obviously going to be one of the dirtiest parts of the horse trailer, so it’ll need frequent cleanings. Step one will be removing anything that’s not bolted in so you can clean under and around any mats, troughs, and tools. Then sweep the floor to remove all the debris you can.

Make a mixture that’s one part bleach to ten parts water and spread it over the floor—and any other flat surface there is. Let it dry to fully disinfect those surfaces, then raise the front of your trailer slightly, either with jacks or by parking and securing it on a sloped surface. Use the hose and start at the front of the trailer, working your way back. Pay extra attention to any seams or joints.

Let the trailer dry again and sprinkle some baking soda on the floors before you put the mats back in.

Mats

Speaking of mats, they’ll need plenty of care, too. Scrub them with that combination of bleach and water, starting at the top left corner and working your way down. Use your hose to rinse them thoroughly, then let them dry before putting them back in the trailer.

Corners And Hinges

These areas always seem to build up surprisingly amounts of debris and grime. Any seams or joints that aren’t cleaned by hosing down the interior will need special attention. Give them as deep a clean as you can.

We hope these tips help you keep your horse trailer spotless and comfortable for your animals! If you have any questions, or you’d like to see the horse trailers we have for sale, contact us at Lone Star Trailers. We proudly serve Waco and Temple, Texas—let us serve you today!
