Buying the Right Cargo Trailer For Your Move
Whether you’re downsizing, upgrading, or just looking for a new place to call home, the process of moving is universally unloved. We here at Lone Star Trailers want to help you get that process over and done with as quickly, efficiently, and safely as possible, so we’ve put together some tips for buying the right cargo trailer to help you move, below. The Size
You’ll need to balance two factors when you look at cargo trailers: cargo capacity and towability. You want a large enough trailer that you can efficiently move large volumes of cargo at once, but not so large that your tow vehicle will struggle to tow the cargo trailer when it’s full. First, check your tow vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) to find its upper limits, then get an estimate for how much a full load would weigh combined with the cargo trailers you’re looking at. If necessary, you could rent a more powerful tow vehicle, but you wouldn’t be able to use the cargo trailer effectively when the lease is up.
The Distance
Next, think about how far you’ll need to tow the trailer. If you’re just moving a few miles away, then your average cargo trailer should do fine. But if you want to use it to move cargo hundreds of miles, you might want some additional features like:
- A mounted spare tire.
- Stabilizers.
- LED lights.
- A door-hold back latch.
- Sturdier construction.
- Extra tie-down spots and tie-downs.
